It's been a long 10 years since the first X-Files movie aired in 1998 and left fans begging for a sequel. Their patience has finally paid off with the currently untitled upcoming release of the X-Files sequel, due to hit theaters July 25, 2008. X-Files fans rejoice!
The X-Files originally premiered as a series in 1993 and had a nine year run until the show’s end in 2002. The first X-File movie, The X-Files: Fight the Future, was released in 1998, grossing more than 187 million dollars. Production budget for the sequel is listed at 35 million dollars.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be returning to their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The sequel has once again been written by creators Chris Carter and Frank Spotniz. Mark Snow, the original composer for The X-Files, also returns.
Joining the cast will be rapper Xzibit, Amanda Peet, and Billy Connolly. Details as to their roles in the upcoming movie are still under wraps.
The show’s creators are determined to keep fans in the dark about the plot line, much like characters Mulder and Scully were kept in the dark with conspiracy theories and mysterious alien mythology during the series run.
As part of the secrecy, the film has tossed out some deliberate red herrings. The first being werewolf costumes, and the next was a faked kiss scene between Mulder and Scully. Interviews with the writers and actors have also been misleading.
Carter has revealed that the sequel won’t be revisiting the previous alien theme as in the first movie, but instead will be a stand-alone film and easy enough for newcomers to the X-File phenomenon to understand and enjoy. It’s guaranteed to thrill faithful fans and newcomers alike.
The film will pick up in the current time line, six years after the series ended. And although Mulder and Scully are back, don’t expect to see all of the familiar faces from the series. After six years, Mulder and Scully are moving forward with their lives.
One thing is for certain. The long awaited sequel has fans eagerly counting the days until the movie premiere. And although the series itself most likely won’t be returning, there are already whispers and rumors of possibly a third movie brewing. Fans can only hope.
